Electric scooters are something of a cultural phenomenon at the minute. They’ve been around for a while, but with recent advancements in technology, they’ve hit the mainstream running (or should we say ‘riding’). When they offer a quick and low-cost way to get around town, it’s really not hard to see why.

With lots of electric scooters on the market, it can be difficult to tell what’s good and what’s not. Rest assured, we’re here to show you some of the best electric scooters for commuting available, and we’ve found something for every type of commuter.

Expect little less than quality with a name like Segway – one of the first companies to bring personal electric vehicles into the mainstream. There are three riding modes available: Eco, Standard, and Sport, and the scooter even comes with a handy system that recycles braking energy back into the battery. What more could you ask for?

The Apollo City is one of the best folding electric scooters for commuting with lightweight construction and dual-spring suspension. It’s range and top speed clock in at a little under the Kickscooter Max, but with the fast-charge battery charging in as little as 3 hours, this can be a great option if you find you’re on the move a lot throughout the day. You don’t need to worry about that fast-charge tech killing your battery either thanks to an impressive 24-month battery warranty included as standard.

This nifty little e-scooter has a super lightweight and compact design; with a slightly shorter deck and an extendable (and de-extendable) stem, it folds up into the smallest spaces. The Turboant X7 Pro doesn’t lack in technical features either – it has a top speed of 20 mph, a triple-breaking system that combines electric and mechanical brakes, and even a custom top speed setting to make it easier to abide by local speed limits. The best electric commuter scooter for adults who still like to play with their toys, Voro’s EMOVE Touring Scooter has a modular design that’s easy to customize and upgrade to your liking. You can choose between a button or twist throttle or even add a seat. Voro even points to releasing optional upgrades based on customer suggestions, which is a nice touch.

This scooter also has a triple front suspension and dual-spring rear suspension, and a higher clearance height for smooth riding. You’ll benefit from improved power efficiency thanks to the brake energy recycling mechanism that helps recharge the battery when you stop. This gives this scooter a 25-mile range on just 4 hours charge, which is more than enough for the average commuter.

The Fluid Horizon is a modest scooter at a modest price. While not equipped with quite as many bells and whistles as some of the other products on this list, it’s a reliably built e-scooter with plenty of range and an impressive top speed of 25mph. Again, the Horizon utilizes brake-for-power energy recycling to make the most of that valuable kinetic energy as you make your way around town.

Another option in Segway’s impressively-built Ninebot Kickscooter Range, the E45 model comes at a slightly lower price tag but with many of the same benefits. While the default range is not quite up-to-spec with the Kickscooter Max at 28 miles compared to 40 miles, you do have the option to customize it with an external battery for an extended range that is comparable. Both scooters have improved traction control and a slick, lightweight design that’s easy to store while you’re at work, the gym, or jumping on the train for longer commutes.

Another fantastic product by Fluid Freeride – who plants 100 trees for every scooter sold, the Inokim Light 2 is a new-and-improved iteration of the e-scooter they dub ‘the people’s favourite.’ This stylish yet functional scooter comes in various colours and has a compact, foldable design (with an extendable handlebar stem) that makes it easy to store in any setting. At a 21 mph top speed and a 15-mile range, this might not be the scooter for those with long, cross-country commutes to tackle, but it makes a great low-profile commuter scooter for day-to-day use.

One of the features that really stand out on this scooter is a responsive brake light that helps to tell vehicles behind you that you’re about to stop. Between this, the dual-braking system, and the extra-bright LED headlight, this electric scooter offers a little more in the way of safety features than most. A smart battery management system also helps to prevent overcharging and discharging and prolongs the battery’s lifespan in both the short term (between charges) and the long term.

If your local terrain is a little less predictable than the average metro commute, the Apollo Explore might be a great pick. It’s built for multi-terrain use and can climb an impressive 36% incline, so comfort over both urban landscapes and more offroad environments will likely be a consideration for you. Like some of the other e-scooters on this list, the Apollo Explore recycles braking energy back into the battery to extend the range and improve efficiency. With a 34-mile range and a top speed of 31 miles per hour, it should be capable of seeing you through even the most unexpected of adventures.

The WideWheel Pro – as the name suggests – features a wider-profile wheelbase that makes for smooth city riding. If you live somewhere like San Francisco, where there’s a lot of steep inclines to navigate, the Fluid WideWheel Pro will stand strong as it climbs up to an astonishing 30% incline with little effort. However, our favourite feature on the electric scooter is the cruise control setting, which makes riding through the city with the wind through your helmet (you had better be wearing one, kiddo) a pretty therapeutic experience.

If you’re looking for something with serious range, the EMOVE Cruiser by Voro Motors is for you. Offering up to 62 miles of travel on a single 12-hour charge, the battery in this scooter is a beast, to say the least. Like other Voro Motors scooters, the design is modular so that you can customize with seats and various throttle designs. This scooter is also IPX6 water-resistant, which is pretty unparalleled when it comes to weather resistance. It will keep you moving come rain or storm (but you might want a decent raincoat).

The Fluid Cityrider should be at the top of your list if you need an e-scooter that’s lightweight, compact, and packed with safety features. As well as powerful LED lights on the front and rear, the Cityrider also offers turn signals to alert other road users of your intentions, as well as reflectors to make your scooter more visible from all directions during night rides. This scooter doesn’t have the impressive range or top speed of some of the other options we’ve talked about, but if you’re navigating busy urban areas at all times of day, then it pretty much offers everything you need from a scooter. Oh yeah, and did we mention that they’ll plant 100 trees for every scooter purchased?

While next-level scooter tech and 50-mile ranges are the dream, we can appreciate that not everyone can afford the fastest or the slickest scooter on the market. The Razor Ecosmart is a more wallet-friendly option that still offers everything you’d need for short, daily commutes. This scooter also has the added benefit of both a padded seat and a built-in cargo basket, so it’s a perfect tool for popping into town to pick up the weekly shopping.
